“Sevens has it all”, says Lord Coe!

Once again the benefits of 7s Rugby have been recognised and outlined by a famous sports personality.

British Olympic Association Chairman Lord Sebastian Coe underlined the great potential of 7s Rugby, with a special focus on facing the major challenges of sport in the 21st century, the IRB reports.

Coe emphasised at the IRB World Rugby Conference and Exhibition in Dublin, the all-round athleticism of its participants as well as its ability to bring more young people into sport as a whole.

“You’ve only got to watch Sevens at its best to see that it is ostensibly a young person’s game,” Coe said. “For the Olympic movement that is important, because, if the challenge of the 20th century was to take sport to the world, the challenge of the 21st century is to take sport to young people.

Furthermore the 57-year-old double gold Olympic medalist said that “Sevens will add a dimension to the athleticism of young people; I think it is a great addition to the Olympic movement.”

For Coe, the reintroduction of Rugby to the Olympic Games in 2016 – after a 92-year absence – will see a long-held ambition finally come to fruition.

“I’m delighted that Rugby is now an officially recognised Olympic sport,” he said.

“I also think that the presence of Sevens in the Olympic Games will enhance the strength of Test match rugby, and that’s really important, because you can’t have them working against each other.”

Tom Mitchell about a life as a 7s Pro

In an exclusive blog for The Rugby Paper, England Sevens player Tom Mitchell, takes us on a very personal journey of his life as a professional 7s athlete.

In his latest post, the third part of the series (part one and two), Mitchell explains how England Sevens spent previously two weeks in a row together to prepare and perform at the first stop of the HSBC Sevens World Series, the Gold Coast 7s in Australia, finishing third after beating South Africa in the plate final.

He mentions that the day-to-day routines before and during competitions are ‘governed by meal times and team schedules’ and ‘a 30-hour journey with a bruised and battered body’ is certainly not the most comfortable state you want to be in, however there are always strong signs of camaraderie in the England side, when the team comes together, which makes the job much more enjoyable.

Now, the focus for the team is on the next stop, the Dubai 7s in four weeks time. The preparation for this tournament, have just started with hard work and a specific emphasis on development, described by Mitchell as another challenge for England Sevens.

New star coach for Kenya sevens, but things are far from good at the moment

Former South Africa sevens head coach Paul Treu will take charge of the Kenya sevens team from November 1st onwards. Treu spent the previous nine years working with his native country and guiding the side to 14 HSBC Sevens World Series tournament wins as well as one World Series champion title in 2008-2009, the pinnacle of his coaching career.

The 42-year-old from the Western Cape takes up the position as head coach and performance director and will be in charge of his new side for the first time at the next round of the HSBC Sevens World Series in Dubai on November 29 and 30 before returning to his native land a week later for the South Africa Sevens in Port Elizabeth on December 7 and 8. For an extensive article please click here.

Only 24 hours after Treu’s appointment, some rather disappointing news was released from the Kenyan camp. According to an article of insidethegame several members of the Kenyan side have gone on strike in protest over delays in the signing of new contracts in a move which threatens their participation in Dubai next month.

The players claim that they are owed three months’ worth of wages, a fact been denied by the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU). Various players have reported that they had not yet received new contracts and it is believed problems have occurred because KRU have suffered delays in the renewal of their contract with sponsors Kenya Airways.
